Janice and I were married twice! We first had a Christian wedding in the front garden of Tim & Sue Ball in Kabul Afghanistan. It was really great, we had all kinds of friends attend; both Afghan and expats. This was on October, 1977. Then a week later we had a legal wedding at the British Embassy along with another couple that was getting married. It was all posh and proper. Just look at Janice! She's beautiful, isn't she?
We took a week off and went down south to Kandahar. While there, we went out to some ruins in the desert and on the way we met the guy who married use; he was out in the middle of the desert having tea!
The next most important thing in my life was meeting my wife. I really needed a good Christian girl to look after me. I know this sounds strange, but to back track a little; while in India I had caught a peculiar kind of Malaria which later almost killed me. Know that I have never been afraid of death for I know my destiny is with Jesus. But this Malaria affected me in different ways. It caused me to experience depression from time to time and also a deep loneliness. Ever since then I have had this trouble. So God certainly knew what he was doing by bringing Janice into my life. We met and were married three months later there in Kabul. We had our honeymoon in a place called Kandahar, Afghanistan. Click to open the wedding pictures
My wife was formerly with an organization called WEC International which we ended up rejoining together. We left Afghanistan as the war had heated up by then and went to Britain. Joining WEC wasn't one of my better decisions. So, our son had come along by then. After praying about it, we ended up in Egypt being seconded to another organization called Middle East Media. Even there were really good times in Egypt where I saw the Lord work, it proved to be a difficult time. A year in the States and then we went to Yemen and worked with WEC there with their hospital. After five years in Yemen, I started to experience eye problems. We returned to New Zealand and after three different operations on my eyes, they seemed to return to some kind of normality. I really missed the interaction with the Afghans, the Egyptians and the Yemen people for I related very well with Muslims and gained many friends. In spite of the environment, I shared the Word of God whenever I could during my time in those places. Later, in New Zealand I got trained as an English Language teacher and continued to work with people of different nationalities and often was able to share Christ with them. I had taught a year in Egypt ESOL and I really enjoyed it.
Some years later I went to work teaching in Eastwest Training College in New Zealand which was part of WEC International. Again, I really enjoyed working with second language speakers and teaching them. By that time I had a Master's degree in Linguistics from Waikato University, but before that I had received a Diploma in Teaching from the College of Education in Christchurch and several certificates in ESOL. From there Janice and I went to Korea and taught in an English Training Institute which was really great. But this was only short term; we had planned to return but I developed a few more health problems. Afterwards, I joined up with an online Bible Training Institute out of the States for four years. I took about six months off and was hoping to return to South Korea but the Covid-19 virus came about. It wasn't long after that that my wife and I were teaching English on line to those very people in Korea.
My one desire in life has always been to follow God and serve him to the best of my ability which I continue to do even to this day. I trust in him to this day.
